REGULARS at the Red Lion pub and the crew of HMS Yarnton enjoyed a long-term friendship. So when the minesweeper was withdrawn from service in 1985, it was natural that the pub should want a memento. The ship’s bell was presented to the pub, to tell customers it was ‘time’.
A new minibus arrived at the Ley Community rehabilitation centre in 1984. With the help of wellwishers and grants, £4,500 had been raised to buy the bus which was to be used by villagers as well as people with drug problems at the Ley Community.
Four members of the village football team put their best boots forward and took part in a sponsored 70-mile walk from Bristol to Oxford in 1983. They raised £600 for the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre at Headington.
