SIGNS warning litterbugs they face £80 fines if they drop rubbish have been installed across the city.

Oxford City Council yesterday unveiled 16 new signs in Oxford to help tackle the litter problem blighting our streets as part of the Cleaner, Greener campaign.

The signs are in the city’s busiest roads and based near litter hotspots, including Queen Street, Cornmarket Street and Broad Street.

John Tanner, council board member for a Cleaner, Greener Oxford, said: “The signs will remind people that we take the issue of dropping litter seriously.

“We have placed the signs in areas where litter is still a problem. Most people are not now dropping litter and the message to those that do is ‘please use one of the dozens of litter bins’.”

The Cleaner, Greener Oxford campaign, backed by the Oxford Mail, was launched in November to help reduce litter in the city.

Oxford City Council revealed it costs the taxpayer more than £1m a year to tidy the centre.
