Sir – I was very surprised to read that a ‘best baguette’ competition had been organised (Report, February 4).

Surely baguettes are the least admired of bread, originally being baked three times a day because of their short plate life. Nowadays they are mostly the mass-produced reputation loss-leader.

What a pity the organisers didn’t simply ask for best bread produced by French bakers, perhaps next time?
