Sir – We read Professor Monaco’s letter (December 24, 2009) with great interest and naturally are pleased to learn that there was an architectural competition for the design of buildings on this site.

However, we are appalled that the outcome of the competition was a “design of the utmost banality” to quote from Mr Gray’s letter [December 10].

You have published only one other letter (January 14, 2010) on this topic in which Nicola Mallows said “In the interests of Oxford as a whole it is most important to get this site right” and we would echo this, but we can’t help wondering why it has attracted such little public interest.

With regard to Professor Monaco’s statement that “The University takes the architecture of its buildings very seriously we would invite him to accompany us on a brief tour of some University buildings to see if he really can sustain his assertion and, perhaps, learn lessons from past mistakes.

Professor C. Ruiz, David Hills, Oxford
