Sir – The planned expansion of Thornhill park-and-ride, together with the legitimate concerns of ‘High Priority’ expressed last week (that the deal brokered by the county council should have addressed the issue of buses to London and the airports), must surely prompt the council to grasp this nettle. Only a very small proportion of London bus users start or finish their journeys at Gloucester Green, or even in the High Street.

We already have a shuttle facility as requested by High Priority’ called park-and-ride. The latter service, very underused, could be expanded and a ticket system devised along lines consistent with those outlined in the letter from James Fletcher last week.

To require London bus users, like myself, travelling to Headington or the city centre to change at Thornhill to park-and-ride seems a very small price to pay for reducing the carbon emissions and vibration caused by large buses in the city.

Airports could still go to Gloucester Green: they represent only a very small minority of the non-local buses on the High, and nearly all their passengers have hold luggage (unlike the vast majority of London bus users), so requiring them also to change at Thornhill would be unreasonable.
