EMPLOYEES who could not attend work because of the snow will find themselves having to make the time up.

Workers at the Cowley Mini Plant will have to work the hours they missed at a later date.

The plant uses a working time account scheme where staff ‘bank’ their overtime or make up hours lost during slow production periods.

Plant spokesman Rebecca Baxter said: “The hours will be put into the working time account.

“Everyone is paid their monthly wage and they make the time up later.”

The plant was closed all day on Wednesday with both shifts cancelled, while the Thursday early shift was also scrapped, meaning some workers will have to make up two shifts under the system.

Sainsbury’s, which employs hundreds of staff at nine supermarkets in the county, said staff who missed work would not be paid.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “If staff are unable to come into work then they can make up the time later, take a day’s holiday or unpaid leave.”

Tesco said staff could swap shifts, work at a store nearer to them or make up time at a later date.

John-Paul Warner, a spokesman for Cowley-based distribution firm Unipart, said any worker who had not made it to work would be offered the chance to make up the hours or take a day’s leave.

He added: “We are dealing with cases on an individual basis.”
