AN expert on cemeteries could be employed in a bid to increase Oxford’s burial space for the next 100 years.
An Oxford City Council report is urging councillors to employ a consultant to earmark areas which could be used for interment.
Headington and Rose Hill cemeteries have been closed for burials since 2003 and 1995 respectively, while Botley and Wolvercote only have enough space for the next 10 years.
On Wednesday, the council’s executive board will decide whether to give the £20,000 scheme the go-ahead.
Land used for burial has to conform to strict regulations, such as the type of soil, proximity to water and roads and how close the site is to residential areas. The consultant would carry out studies and conduct environmental surveys for two or three potential sites that meet the criteria, before presenting his findings to councillors.
Oxfordshire is currently facing a grave shortage as cemeteries across the county rapidly approach capacity.
