WHAT hypocrites Oxford city council’s Labour members are turning out to be.

When setting the council tax budget this year, they moaned about the high cost the city has to bear to keep the concessionary bus fares.

But, as soon as the Government gives £2.2m to offset this cost, they divert the money to save our toilets (Oxford Mail, November 17).

This deceitful transfer of money is no different to the bankers who are using Government bail-out money to pay staff bonuses.

The scale might be different but the principle remains the same.

Of course, our public toilets should be saved, as they are a necessity.

Their maintenance and daily running costs should be met from council tax, which could be kept low by cutting back extravagant department budgets and the non-creation of unproductive posts.

Once again, it is a case of being penny wise, pound foolish, as next year, when setting the council tax, they will be facing the same problem again, and extra funding from the Government may not be forthcoming.
