NEIGHBOURS tonight described their shock when a pensioner died after he was found trapped under what was believed to be his own car in Chipping Norton.

Derek Perriton, 73, of Tilsley Road, was pronounced dead at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital after police, firefighters and the air ambulance were called to the cul-de-sac at about 10.30am.

No other vehicles are thought to have been involved and police have not arrested anyone in relation to the incident.

A pensioner from Tilsley Road said: “I could not believe how many police there were. When I saw the air ambulance come in, I knew things were serious. I couldn’t make out exactly what happened, but the accident did seem to involve his own car. It was very odd.”

She added: “It’s such a tragic loss of life, it’s so sad. He was a very nice man and a good neighbour. It’s hard to come to terms with.”

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, but tonight it was not clear how Mr Perriton had died.

A family friend described Mr Perriton as a true gentleman.

He added: “He was an extraordinary man and a very caring husband and he will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

“It is a tragic loss to the community.

“He was a keen gardener and spent a lot of time devoted to his wife Joan. In his retirement they have been able to enjoy a lot of holidays together.

“He was also extremely practical and would go out of his way to help others, even when there was no gain involved.

“He was, in every sense of the word, a true gentleman.”

Thames Valley Police spokesman Chris Kearney said officers were called to the scene by firefighters after reports a man was trapped under a black Volkswagen Golf.

Sgt Nick Perks said: “We have launched an investigation into the circumstances of this incident and we would appeal to anyone who may have seen anything to come forward and tell us what they saw.

“Our condolences are with the family at this sad time.”

A spokesman for the Oxfordshire coroner confirmed they had been notified of Mr Perriton’s death but had not opened an inquest. His next of kin have been told.
