It was a cold winter’s night and the rain was lashing down, but once safe inside Art Jericho feelings of gloom vanished. I was in a buzzy space filled with a glorious selection of pictures painted by members of the Oxford Art Society for their Winter Show. But where do I begin when so many imaginative pictures shouted for attention?

Perhaps Jane Hope’s oil Quinces from Cathie is as good a place as any. A delightful picture that captures the essence of this autumn fruit. Rona’s 27 Weeks (Silver), is an oil painting of four pregnant women – or has she painted one woman four times?

Clare Basssett’s oil painting Undecided, depicting a women, sitting head on knees, is intriguing. What troubles this woman, why is she undecided? In using oils for her still life Italian Collection, Valerie Petts, who is known for her dreamy watercolours, has proved she can handle a different medium well.

Graham Rice’s linocut Floating is a powerful study of twisted bodies in a boat moving towards what might be paradise. It’s a great picture. So is Caroline Mass’s Figure in a Landscape in monoprint and drypoint. This picture allows us how it must be to walk alone in such a beautiful landscape as dusk settles.

Phyl Kiggell’s print Workers on a Wall in Thailand leaves one guessing – as some pictures should. Jennifer Bartlett’s Pumpkin print reminds us of the wonders of autumn and Jago Pryce’s picture of the little white dog watching a butterfly is fun.

This exhibition features superb paintings, all of which would make terrific Christmas gifts. The show is on until December 22.
