VOLUNTEERS used their skills to turn a tithe barn into a Roman Catholic church for the village. The picture was taken in 1963 when work at Rectory Farm, Crown Road, had been under way for 18 months. The 100-strong congregation had been holding Mass at the Merry Bells village hall.

The So-Lo store in the village opened its doors to its first customers in 1978. They were invited to ‘Meet the Champ’ –- Jenny Bale, seen in appropriate attire.

Wheatley’s 18th century windmill had fallen into disrepair and in 1975, talks were being held to decide whether it would be restored.
