Blenheim Palace has won a silver award in a scheme set up to encourage businesses to go green.

It became the 2,000th member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, after taking measures such as introducing low energy lighting and putting timers on fountains.

Staff have also started using more eco-friendly cleaning products and have improved recycling.

At a tree planting session to mark the occasion Fu Ying, the Chinese ambassador to the UK, did the initial honours with the spade.

Also present were Penelope Viscountess Cobham, left, who is chairman of tourist agency VisitEngland, the Duke of Marlborough and, right, Tory leader and local MP David Cameron.

Entrants are scrutinised on more than 145 measures, including efficient lighting and heating, nature conservation, use of renewable energy, buying local produce and community involvement.

The Duke said: “We all feel incredibly proud of these important achievements, which recognise the high standards and continuing hard work that is applied daily to improve the enjoyment of our visitors.”

It was the first time the palace had entered.
