IT IS astonishing that, in the face of unanimous public opposition, the minority Labour group on Oxford City Council continues to press for closure of toilets.

The Lib Dems have always opposed, and will always oppose, this measure, which will affect many residents – especially the elderly and disadvantaged, as well as tourists visiting the city.

As councillor Turner said, we did put forward a saving of £50,000 in our last year’s budget – but this was to be achieved by more efficient management of our toilets, not by closing them.

Figures produced by our officers show that other comparable local authorities have significantly lower costs per visit, and we believe we could, and should, learn from them.

The hardship caused by closing toilets in Oxford, and the damage to the reputation of the city, is far greater than any saving that may be made. We shall do all we can to ensure that this unfair and unwise proposal is rejected.

JIM CAMPBELL, Councillor, Oxford City Council
