Sir – Barbara Cleary (Letters, October 15) commented that cities such as Oxford were not built with cars in mind. Arguably, the present level of use of cars in Britain and elsewhere is a wasteful, unsustainable aberration. This can’t continue indefinitely.

The disadvantages of unrestrained car use are clear, both for people and the environment. We should be preparing for a time when it is common for people not to own a car, and rare for a family to own more than one.

We should be taking steps now to ensure that land-use planning frameworks, and transport facilities, are changed accordingly.
