Calls for Oxford City Council to return to the drawing board over plans to develop the Westgate are most unwelcome.

Various plans to revitalise this area of the city and to provide the modern shopping facilities Oxford deserves have been pursued for more than 20 years.

The only thing that has prevented their fruition this time is the recession.

There is now an opportunity for the city council to put pressure on the developers to set a timetable for development. It is an opportunity it should take, but with care.

The vast majority of us want to see this major new shopping centre and, if it means biding our time for a couple more years, then it will be worth it.
