WHEN children asked for new facilities for their village playground, parish councillors knew they were in for a lot of hard work.
But two years on – and following a marathon fundraising effort by villagers – youngsters in Leafield, near Witney, are happily playing on new swings and climbing equipment.
A new play area for teenagers has also been created, with a five-way swing and a witch’s hat climbing frame.
Leafield Parish Council’s acting chairman Fiona Belardo, said: “We are pleased our children are able to enjoy a new terrific play area right in the heart of the village.
“The importance for children to play in a safe environment near to where they live has always been the driving force for this project.”
In 2007, a survey in the village found children wanted new play equipment. Work started in June this year and will culminate in an official opening ceremony on November 7.
Work on installing a skate park is also due to begin in the coming weeks and is expected to be completed by Christmas.
The cost of the total project will be about £185,000. Children raised £3,500 through sponsorship events and cake stalls.
