Sir – With the recent introduction of 20mph speed limits for motorists in Oxford I have become increasingly concerned for the safety of cyclists, as it will become very difficult for cars to safely overtake cyclists in areas of Oxford that are not overly congested.
I suggest placing a citywide speed limit on cyclists of 10mph. This would prevent their constantly being tailgating by large vehicles.
By setting up mandatory licensing of cyclists in Oxford the fees raised could finance the scheme.
Enforcement could be through a network of average speed cameras augmented with face recognition technology or the number plating of cyclists or their bicycles.
Any shortfall in the expense could be met via a tax for maintaining the roads and equipment or a simple rise in council tax.
This proposal is a surefire way to invest in the infrastructure of Oxford and ensure the safety of all road users.
