Oxford United fans can drink to their team’s success with the launch of a ‘yellow beer’ to raise money for the manager’s transfer kitty.

Pub landlord and real-ale brewer Chris Meeson has created the 12th Man brew to toast his beloved U’s.

Mr Meeson, whose grandfather was once chairman of the club, will unveil the tipple at the eighth annual Headington Beer Festival at his pub, The Masons Arms, in Quarry School Place, next month.

All profits will go to the 12th Man initiative, a fund set up by fans to provide United manager Chris Wilder with money to spend on transfer fees or players’ wages.

It has so far raised about £3,500 in less than two months.

Mr Meeson, 42, said: “We’re just really big Oxford fans and it’s our way of helping the 12th Man fund.

“The Old Bog Brewery is a microbrewery we have here at the pub. It’s very small and we brew just enough for the pub and sometimes take beers to local festivals.

“Initially there were will be two barrels, which is about 140 pints. If it takes off we will talk to the guys at the 12th Man and see if we could do anything with them in the future.”

He added: “I was at the first home game of the season and I saw them selling the 12th Man badges and I read the programme and saw all the different activities being done to raise money.

“We were wracking our brains thinking ‘what could we do?’, then I was planning the beer festival and it just came to me that here was an opportunity.

“We’ve called it a yellow real ale, one of the golden ales. It’s got a good a citrus flavour and is 4.1 per cent. It’s a great summer beer.”

Talking of his love for Oxford United, Mr Meeson said: “My grandfather was chairman for 13 years and my father was a director for many years, so there’s definitely a family tie.

“I’m 42 and I’ve been watching since I was eight. I’ve seen the ups and the downs, although the high points seem a long time ago.”

Mark Sennett, from the 12th Man initiative, said: “We are delighted that the Masons Arms has thought of the 12th Man when creating a guest beer for this year’s festival.

“It is a great gesture by the landlord to offer all the profits to the fund and this is a great example of how fans can get involved and directly help the club.

“I hope as many fans as possible stop by the pub to support a fellow fan and in turn raise cash that will be used to improve the playing squad and give Oxford United an even greater chance of securing promotion this season.”

The beer festival will feature more than 40 real ales, a cider bar and a pig roast. It takes place on September 4, 5 and 6.
