Residents on an Oxford estate are going to celebrate their first fun day in more than 30 years.

All the fun of a summer fayre will be brought to Wood Farm on its sports field tomorrow with children and adults set to enjoy a ‘healthy food picnic’, a fancy dress competition, face painting and dozens of games.

The day has been funded by the Churchill Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (Tara) and Oxford City Council in order to give young people on the estate something to celebrate and for neighbours to get to know each other.

Community leader and association chairman Pete Bonney 69, said: “This is the first community fun day in about 30 years.

“The Tara has decided to give the children here something to do because nothing happens in Wood Farm and our residents have to go elsewhere if we want to enjoy a community fun day.

“The kids deserve this because there’s been years and years that have gone past, generations even, since we’ve had one. Parents and grandparents won’t know what’s hit them come tomorrow!

“It will be rewarding to get the kids off the streets and to give them something to do and let them know there is a future for them on Wood Farm.”

“A lot of people have moved to the area recently and the faces are changing so it makes it harder to get that sense of community going.

Mr Bonney, of Nuffield Road, who organised the day with his wife Carol, said: “This will help to develop the community spirit here.

“You can have a neighbour and not know their names these days – not like the old days.

“This will be a chance to change that.”

Locals believe it has been more than 30 years since their last community fun day. However, it has been so long no-one can pinpoint the exact date.

Among the games on offer tomorrow will be croquet, bucket-and-ball, hook-a-duck, lucky dip, guess-the-weight, guess-the-name and a tombola.

The event will be opened by Vince Boulter, 93, of Titup Hall Drive, one of the estate’s oldest residents.

If it proves a success, it is hoped it can be turned into an annual event.

Mum-of-three Jenny O’Connor, 37, of Awgar Stone Road, said: “This is really excellent because there isn’t really anything around in Wood Farm.

“It gives our kids something to look forward to in the summer holidays which can be very boring for them.

“It has really caught the imagination of our kids and it means they get to play with different children, and it’s great for the adults too who get to meet different faces.

“Peter and Carol are excellent for doing things like this.”
