THE number of people applying to study at Oxford University has risen by 12.5 per cent — well above the average 9.7 per cent rise in applications to other universities.

Figures released by the University and Colleges Admission Service, UCAS, show there were 1,788 more applications for the academic year starting in September 2009.

An Oxford University spokesman said: “In the last application round, over 15,000 people applied for the approximately 3,000 undergraduate places on offer, making it the most competitive year in the university’s history.”

At Oxford Brookes University, the figure rose by 3.3 per cent, from 20,003 to 21,508.

Applications for foundation degree courses more than doubled, by 241 per cent from 181 to 618.
