OXFORD City Council has started consultation on its plans to save £50,000 a year by closing up to seven of the city’s 26 public toilets.

Facilities in Castle Street, Magdalen Street, St Giles, Woodstock Road, South Parade, Barns Road, Littlemore, Knights Road and Headington Hill are all under threat of being sold off or demolished.

John Tanner, the council's executive member for a cleaner, greener Oxford, wants to hear from residents about the quality of existing toilets and whether they had used them in the last 12 months.

The council is also consulting on plans to introduce a community toilet scheme, which would encourage shops and pubs to open their facilities to the public.

Mr Tanner said: “We are determined to provide residents and visitors to Oxford with a good standard of comfortable public loos.”

The consultation runs until Friday, August 21.

See the council website for details of how to take part.
