An operation carried out in the villages around Bicester to check on sales of alcohol to underage drinkers saw six out of the seven stores pass the test.

The operation, carried out by Thames Valley Police’s licensing team, was part of efforts to reduce underage drinking and related anti-social behaviour in the area.

The Village Store in Steeple Aston, Tesco Express stores in Beaumont, Southwold, Glory Farm and Langford and the Launton Village Shop all passed.

The one store to fail the operation was the Park Store in Heyford, where the member of staff responsible was issued with an £80 fixed penalty notice.

This was the first time that a test operation had been carried out at any of these stores.

Licensing officer Tony Cope said: “This type of operation is carried out using intelligence we have gathered from local communities about underage drinking in specific areas and we target premises we think might be providing the alcohol.

“Not only are we enforcing the licensing laws, but it also helps to tackle alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour by young people in these areas.”
