Sir – Thank you for your front page story on Pullens Lane Allotments. I am writing to express my deep concern and anger at the proposals outlined by Oxford Brookes University, to build on the site of Pullens Lane Allotments. The destruction of this green space would be a travesty.
Not only do the allotments provide health benefits to local residents with opportunities for fresh air, exercise and the chance to grow vegetables, this valuable green space encourages a diverse eco-system of plant and bird life; crucial in the midst of a city. The allotments have been in use for almost 100 years (my allotment neighbour has had his for more than 45 years!), and the destruction of a vibrant community for local residents would be an outrage.
Furthermore, there is the underlying issue that Brookes appears to be intent on further expansion, particularly of student accommodation, within a small geographical area.
An expansion of the student population risks dominating communities in Headington and East Oxford, to their detriment. I think the planning of further accommodation needs the utmost care, with consideration for the long-term impact on local areas.
We must all take a stand to preserve Pullens Lane Allotments and to stop Brookes overwhelming our local community.
