Road bosses are considering opening St Helen’s Wharf Bridge in Abingdon to two-way traffic.

The idea, being looked at by Oxfordshire County Council, has received a mixed reaction from residents.

The council has considered the traffic, air quality and noise impact of several alternatives – including closing the bridge completely.

But a council spokesman last night confirmed that widening the bridge and opening it to traffic in both directions was now the only option being considered.

Frances Scaddan, 65, of nearby Fellows Close, said two-way traffic would be catastrophic.

She added: “There is no way this should happen. The traffic at peak times is abysmal. It is already two way for cyclists and people on mobility scooters.

“Opening it two-way for motorists would just be an accident waiting to happen.”

Currently, traffic can only travel westbound from Caldecott Road over the bridge into St Helen’s Wharf, and up West St Helen Street to join the High Street.

Joan Glascodine, 86, of St Helen’s Mill, said: “I think it would increase the traffic. It’s a tight area of the town and pedestrians are used to the traffic coming one way.

“Motorists would welcome it as they would be able to travel to town directly.”

Different options for the bridge were first put forward last year as part of efforts to reduce rising pollution levels.

Checks showed levels of nitrogen dioxide were above recommended levels in parts of the town centre.

County council planners have decided not to pursue any of the options for closing the bridge, saying it would increase traffic in Drayton Road.

Schemes which had been considered ranged from peak-hour closure to shutting the bridge completely.

Two-way traffic would see an estimated 132 vehicles crossing the bridge from 8-9am and 267 from 5-6pm.

South Abingdon county councillor Mike Badcock said: “Any opportunity to reduce traffic congestion in Abingdon must be taken very seriously.

“The fact that the bridge will not be considered further for closure will be well received by residents in south Abingdon.”
