THE manager of an animal sanctuary saved just days from closure last night said he was “overwhelmed” by the show of public support at its annual open day.

More than 200 people turned up at the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary in Stadhampton yesterday, pledging their support to keeping the rescue centre running.

By the time the crowds had disappeared, staff were left counting hundreds of pounds in cash handed over in donations, and pocketed dozens of cheques left by visitors.

The animal sanctuary, which cares for animals including abandoned cats, rabbits and dogs, was just days from closure earlier this month because of a funding crisis.

Last week, the Oxford Mail reported how a flood of public donations received by the sanctuary would enable the facility to stay open until at least Christmas.

Centre manager Ron Heath said he was “staggered” that the open day had attracted so many well-wishers.

He said: “This show of support was far more than we ever expected.

“I had young children coming up to me and handing over their pocket money.

“We live off donations, and it’s terrific so many people have helped.

“But, sadly, we need long-term money as well.”

The Rev Headley Feast led a blessing at the sanctuary, which included hymns and prayers and was attended by the Lord Mayor of OxfordMary Clarkson.

Derek Bartlett, 76, and his wife Marie, 63, of Marston, Oxford, turned up with pet Rotweiler Chelsea, who they picked up from the sanctuary in April.

Mr Bartlett said: “We lost a German Shepherd dog we had for 11-and-a-half years, so we came here and found Chelsea.

“It would be sad if this place closed. The support shown proves how much we all want it to stay open.”

Visitors toured the sanctuary, inspecting animal pens housing abandoned and rescued cats, dogs and goats.

Val Nathanielz, 23, of Stadhampton, was looking around the sanctuary hoping to pick up a rescue dog.

She said: “It is so sad.

“What would happen to all the animals if they ran out of money?

“Anyone can buy a brand new puppy, but there are so many dogs that need a home. It’s about giving a dog a new life.”
