Firefighters last night put out a kitchen blaze and dragged an unconscious man from a fire that threatened to engulf a sheltered housing block - Russell House - in Tern walk, Blackbird Leys, Oxford.
Shortly after 9pm, firefighters from Slade fire station were faced with smoke pouring out of a first floor flat.
Crews, wearing specialist breathing apparatus, entered the flat and extinguished the fire, which had been caused by cooking being left unattended, a spokesman said.
The man was treated by paramedics.
The spokesman added: "This is a good example of how smoke alarms can save lives."
