The South of France remains a very exciting place in which to make wine. Producers are not bound by all the rules governing strict usage of certain grape varieties that tend to prevail in many other areas of the country. The result is an array of interesting and characterful wines that are great for early drinking and often display great individuality and flavour.

The Southern France Mixed case costs £82 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.

Domaine du Tariquet Chardonnay/Sauvignon 2007: An excellent and interesting blend in which the sauvignon blanc adds freshness to the chardonnay and complexity to the wine. Very fresh, fruit-driven and extremely drinkable wine.

Les Terres Rousses Viognier 2008: A really clean example of this increasingly popular grape variety which has classic flavours of peach and tropical fruits. Very refreshing.

Vin de Pays du Gard, Cuvée de la Baume 2007: Classic regional red with hints of spice and well rounded redcurrant and raspberry fruit. Ideal with pork and white meats.

Cabernet Sauvignon de Pennautier 2007: A stunning alternative to Bordeaux, this is remarkably well made cabernet that has touches of cedar and full blackcurrant fruit — delicious.
