A FESTIVAL with a South American flavour will be held in Oxford to raise money for a Peruvian orphanage.

Up to 4,000 people are expected to attend the Otra Vida Festival at South Park on Saturday, June 6.

The festival — which will also be a fundraiser for East Oxford hospice Helen & Douglas House — will include seven hours of family activities.

Musicians lined up include Foreign Beggars, Gentleman’s Dub Club, Rafael y Lola, The Molotovs, The Peeps, and Count Skylarkin’.

Storytelling and poetry readings will also be among the attractions.

A South American vibe will run through the festival with piñatas, capoeira displays, and traditional food and drink.

Organiser Phil Knox, 21, said: “A couple of my colleagues worked in Peru and they were really inspired by their experience. They wanted to do something to help them.

“The idea snowballed into this huge festival.”

Mr Knox, who is studying English literature at New College, said: “We wanted to make it a community event involving music, art and poetry from people all across Oxford.

“Hopefully everyone can have an amazing day and raise money for the charity at the same time.”

Mr Knox said the event could raise as much as £20,000 for charity Aldea Yanapay, which would mean work could start on a new orphanage in Peru.

Programme sales will generate an estimated £5,000 for Helen & Douglas House.

Mr Knox said: “With this you know exactly what is going to happen with the money you spend — it is a really tangible thing.

“People are getting more and more excited as the day gets closer and I think we are likely to sell out.”

An after-show party will be held at the O2 Academy in Cowley Road, and will feature a DJ set from Foals’ keyboardist Edwin Congreave.

Helen & Douglas House’s Lin Beekar said: “It’s extremely generous of them to think of us and we are very grateful.

“The community supports us incredibly well and we hope that will continue.”

The event will run between noon and 7pm and tickets cost £10, or £5 for under-12s. Pensioners and under-fives will get in free. The after-show party costs £7.
