Combe Church of England Primary School has been named the top school in the country for teaching the three Rs.

The result comes after national league tables showed one in four 11-year-olds failed both their English and maths tests.

Just 329 primaries succeeded in making sure every 11-year-old reached the standards expected of them in English, maths and science last year.

At 352 primaries every child reached level 4 in both English and maths.

But at the Church Walk school, all pupils reached level 5 in science and maths - the top mark - and 93 per cent of its pupils were awarded level 5 in English.
