A hoax ‘roadworks’ sign, intended as an April Fool’s prank, raised a chuckle at County Hall.

Mischief-makers hung posters warning residents of upcoming roadworks in parts of Headington, Oxford. Residents were warned not to park any vehicles in the roads between 8am and 4pm. It went on to add: “Any vehicles parked in the areas during this time will be towed away.”

People with questions were invited to call a Mr A Foule at Oxfordshire County Council.

Oxfordshire County Council confirmed it had nothing to do with the sign and assured residents no such roadworks were scheduled.

A spokesman added: “We had seven calls. Six pretty much knew it was an April Fool, but wanted to make sure.

“One of the other callers took a little bit more time to convince. The culprit has achieved his aim of raising a chuckle.”

It is not known who left the signs in the street.

Meanwhile, Oxford Mail readers may have noticed our prank on page seven of today’s paper.

Unfortunately, beleagured commuters will be disappointed to learn there are no plans to run a narrow gauge steam rail link between a reopened Abingdon station and Radley.
