Sir – Stagecoach’s protests about the implications of the low emission zone on their bus fleet don’t cut much ice, especially when it was pointed out in the article that they have invested over the last 12 months in a new fleet of 48 vehicles running in Oxford that are only Euro IV standard.

Perhaps they should be reminded that had they co-operated with the local voluntary bus partnership scheme that they signed up to several years ago, they wouldn’t now be in this position.

And as for being forced to scrap large numbers of buses that don’t meet the new standard, and passing the cost on to customers — (i) they couldn’t, without losing business to the Oxford Bus Company, and (ii) they wouldn’t because they’d relocate them to another part of their national outfit.

These are weak protests that don’t bear scrutiny.
