In his letter headed Text Crimes (Oxford Mail letters, March 23). R Tucker tries to claim similarities between two totally different events and then claims there is “one law for the rich and one for the rest of us”.
Yes, two people sadly lost their lives on the motorway but one was awaiting help after breaking down and was hit by a motorist who was in the act of texting on her mobile phone, while the other was drunk and was staggering around, at night, on the carriageway after crashing his own vehicle and was hit by a motorist (Lord Ahmed), who the police say had used his mobile phone several minutes and several miles before he was involved in his fatal accident.
A fact the judge accepted, by saying that the use of the phone on this occasion had nothing to do with the actual collision.
Two different sets of circumstances and therefore two different sentences. Nothing to do with class or titles.
