I recall Ralph Leavis writing to the Oxford Mail several years ago, criticising animals rights activists.

He has continued in the same vein, churning out regular, rumbustious letters since then.

Mr Leavis fails to understand why many people care about animals. Humans are the voice for the animals, be they domestic, wild or farm.

People who care for animals also care for people. Caring and compassion is not a divided issue.

Despite living in the 21st century, there are many cases of animal abuse and neglect in this country.
