New Yatt Riding for the Disabled Group – or NYRDA for short – is an independent charity operating from a dedicated equestrian centre in North Leigh. The charity was formed in 1984 and celebrates its Silver Jubilee this year.

In 2002, they upgraded their facilities by raising over £132,000 to build an Indoor Riding School. They now have an indoor 40 x 20m arena, viewing gallery including mounting facility for riders, dressage mirrors, and plenty of equipment for games and exercises.

With eight working horses and ponies, they provide riding instruction to over 50 children, teenagers and adults from West Oxfordshire each week. Riding is widely recognised as an excellent form of therapy – building self-confidence; improving concentration, co-ordination and balance; providing recreation and sporting opportunities. Above all, riding is fun! The group operates on weekday mornings during term time, and Saturdays throughout the year. NYRDA sessions are run entirely by volunteer Riding for the Disabled Association Instructors and Helpers. “So we are always keen to hear from new recruits aged 16 or over with a couple of hours to spare, an interest in riding and an enthusiasm for making and helping new friends,” said Lorna Slee, NYRDA volunteer co-ordinator.

New helpers are required to complete an application form and undergo a CRB check prior to joining their teams of volunteers. Induction training, support and insurance cover are provided. Helpers can also get involved with some aspects of horse care, site maintenance and fundraising.

The charity needs to raise over £15,000 annually to cover its operating costs. Further information about being a helper at NYRDA and timetables can be found on their website at www.newyattrda.org.uk Alternatively, call Lorna Slee on 01993 778649 any time between 4pm to 8.30pm to talk about helper opportunities, but note the group is unable to offer work experience to students, or offer paid employment. New Yatt RDA is a member group of the Riding for the Disabled Association Incorporating Carriage Driving.

If you are interested in helping, please visit RDA National’s website http://www.rda.org.uk/ to find contact details for other Oxfordshire group locations. April is an important month for NYRDA, and you can support them by taking part in the annual sponsored ride, to be held in the grounds of Eynsham Hall, on Sunday, April 19. This event offers a ten-mile course, including working jumps, and a three-mile course (ideal for younger riders who may be on a lead rein). Ride organiser Kay Alty said: “This is our major fundraising event. In 2008, 142 local riders took part, raising over £5,000 for the group, and we hope to do as well, if not better, in 2009.” Full details, including an entry form to download are available from the sponsored ride page of the website, or contact Kay Alty on 01993 882057.
