Every birthday was celebrated at Summertown Infants’ School in Oxford.
There would be a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday, then the birthday boy or girl would be presented with a shiny, hard-backed, black notebook and a bright new penny.
Daphne Robbins, of Headley Way, Headington, whose maiden name was Harris, has sent in this picture, which she thinks was taken at the school in 1935.
Another of her memories is that Mrs Morris, who lived in Wolsey Road, would make toffee apples for the children from the fruit that grew in the school grounds.
Mrs Robbins writes: “I started going to Summertown Infants in 1932, at the age of three. Miss Ingle was the headmistress and Miss Eustace and Miss Cooper were the two teachers.”
She has remembered most of the girls’ names, but not all the boys. Can anyone fill in the gaps?
