New Year resolutions are made to be broken - unless

they are of the fashion variety. Who can resist the self-made promise of wearing more high heels, investing in statement pieces or donning sequins in the daytime?

Our style experts and celebrities reveal their fashionable plans for 2009 as well as their predictions for what we should all be wearing next season.

Kelly Rowland, singer and face of Disaronno Cocktail Chic (www.disaronno.co.uk/cocktailchic)

2009 FASHION FUTURE?

"I saw the most beautiful dresses at next season Roberto Cavalli, they were long and floaty and there was a lot of back on display. Colours were really summery like yellows, pinks and oranges. Black is great and easy but colour isn't always that easy to pull off - when you get it right though, it can pop."

2008 STYLE BLUNDER?

"I went into Topshop and went crazy! I tried on this really beautiful caramel sweater with buttons but you know when something looks better on the hanger? That's taught me a lesson about trying stuff on before buying."

NEW YEAR STYLE RESOLUTION?

"Recycling. I want to recreate outfits using what is already in my closet. I feel like I have so many clothes that I'm just not wearing."

MUST-HAVE PIECE?

"Leggings. You can wear them with anything and they update any look - dresses, skirts, shorts - the possibilities are endless."

Nicky Hambleton-Jones, Freemans style consultant

2009 FASHION FUTURE?

"There are some really strong colours coming through for spring/summer like orange and fuchsia - even clashed together.

There's always a floral element in spring but this year it's quite bright rather than girly and pretty."

2008 STYLE BLUNDER?

"An extravagant purchase of some Stella McCartney shoes. They cost me a fortune and they are fabulous, but they just look frumpy on my feet so I've never worn them."

NEW YEAR STYLE RESOLUTION?

"I get quite glammed-up when I'm filming, but if I'm working from home I live in jeans and polo necks, so I'd like to dress up irrespective of where I'm going.

There's something nice about making an effort everyday."

MUST-HAVE PIECE?

"Invest in a bit of sequin bling. In times like this we need to dress up and feel expensive and sexy. Wear something sparkly in the day and pare down with jeans or a cardigan."

Monica Cruz, face of Mango with sister Penelope Cruz

2009 FASHION FUTURE?

"I look more to vintage inspirations than catwalk trends. Mine and Penelope's new spring collection for Mango is very much inspired by the pin-up period because we love that era. For me, I'm looking forward to getting back into dresses for the new season. It's just too cold to wear them in winter."

2008 STYLE BLUNDER?

"No. I've made fashion mistakes in the past but now I've learnt that if I see something unsuitable or I know I'm only going to wear it once, I don't buy it."

NEW YEAR STYLE RESOLUTION?

"I plan to wear more feminine dresses during the daytime."

MUST-HAVE PIECE?

"A black dress. I recently wore a black Mango dress for a Vanity Fair party and I loved it."

Lee Lapthorne, catwalk show producer for OnOff (www.thedoll.org/onoff)

2009 FASHION FUTURE?

"There's still a lot of bling on the catwalks but designers are being more savvy because of the credit crunch. The collections are more handcrafted next season, which the high street just can't compete with - fabrics are richer and more embellished. Silhouettes are bigger for next season. There's less body hugging. Shapes are body-con on top but then skirts are voluminous with lots of frills and detailing."

NEW YEAR STYLE RESOLUTION?

"I want to buy more designer clothes because they last forever.

I'd rather buy one high-quality expensive item that will last than hoards of high street gear."

MUST-HAVE PIECE?

"A big chunky knit cardigan. We live in Britain, we're always going to need a chunky knit to keep warm."

Hilary Alexander, fashion director of The Daily Telegraph

2009 FASHION FUTURE?

"One of the most accessible new trends is the nautical revival, it's like very early Chanel - a bit flirty, glam and retro. It's mixed in with silver, not necessarily gold.

Denim's also making a huge comeback in every colour wash imaginable."

2008 STYLE BLUNDER?

"I bought a really cute tea dress from Primark. What I didn't realise was that it had a very low V-neck and I've got boobs. At work, I had to find safety pins and brooches for modesty's sake. I gave it away the next day."

NEW YEAR STYLE RESOLUTION?

"I'm going to recycle clothes in my wardrobe and find new ways of wearing them."

MUST-HAVE PIECE?

"A fabulous pair of shoes. Topshop and New Look have incredible collections. It's a great way to update whatever you've got in your wardrobe."
