Motorists in Oxford city centre will face weeks of delays resulting from roadworks on the St Aldate’s junction with Speedwell Street, due to start on Monday.

Oxfordshire County Council has already completed two sets of improvements in St Aldate’s in recent years.

The worn out road surface at the Speedwell Street junction will be repaired with drainage and kerbs improved at the same time.

To reduce the disruption, work will be carried out in five separate sections, County Hall said.

Pedestrian islands in the area will be improved and traffic lights refurbished.

The work is scheduled to take about 11 weeks to complete, with Scotia Gas replacing a gas main at the same time.

There will be no exit from Speedwell Street into St Aldate’s, and Speedwell Street will be closed eastbound. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation 24 hours a day.

Bus stops outside the police station will be moved further south for the duration of the work, and put back once work is completed.
