There is nothing quite as magical as a trip to the cinema as the festive season approaches.

And this Christmas, for the second year running, the Oxford Mail and Phoenix Picturehouse in Walton Street, Jericho, Oxford, are proud to present our Merry Christmas Matinee Special.

Together, we’re giving anyone over the age of 60 the chance to enjoy three cracking films — and all for just the cost of your favourite local paper.

What’s more, there will be free hot drinks and mince pies to put everyone in the yuletide spirit.

Our festival kicks off on Tuesday, December 16, with The Duchess, a costume drama with Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes.

The following day, we will be showing Easy Virtue, a wonderfully witty and light period comedy that stars Jessica Biel and Colin Firth, and on the Thursday, we finish in real festive style with It’s A Wonderful Life — the ultimate Christmas feel-good film starring James Stewart and Donna Reed.

Suzy Sheriff, manager of the Phoenix, said: “It’s our way of saying ‘Merry Christmas’ to Oxford’s senior citizens.

“Three hugely enjoyable films, plus free mince pies and hot drinks in a warm and friendly environment.”

Jeremy Smith, the Oxford Mail’s entertainments editor said: “Like last year, it should be wonderful fun.

“We’re showing each film at 11am, which means no-one need worry about getting home in the dark.”

Your ticket is simply a copy of that day’s Oxford Mail, just 38p, which will be on sale at the cinema.

Call the Phoenix on 01865 316570 (after 1pm) for information and to book tickets, or Mr Smith on 01865 425435.
