Sir – The wonderful thing about Summertown is the variety of its independent shops.
How shocking therefore to read (November 20) that landlords are doubling rents, and in the middle of a recession. The landlord's agent attributes this to the arrival of Marks & Spencer and other chains. But if we only have M&S, Costa and Starbucks, Summertown will lose it uniqueness: you can get all of these shops in any service station or town in the country. It is time for councillors to take action to stop this greedy, exploitative rent hike, and keep Summertown special.
