Illuminations with a twist are once again set to spring up on an Oxford estate this Christmas.

For the second year running, a selection of homes and community buildings in Rose Hill will be adorned with personalised decorations as part of Modern Art Oxford’s Street Lights project.

Oxford artists Katy Beinart and Jo Huyg have been working with families and young people in the area to create the displays, which are inspired by participants’ hobbies and personalities.

On Saturday, a public tour around the estate will be led by the artists to mark the formal switching-on of the illuminations. They will remain lit until Twelfth Night, January 6 next year.

Frances Arnold, from the Pembroke Street gallery, said: “Street Lights offers a different take on traditional festive light displays.

“Inspired by participants’ hobbies and interests, each light reveals a little of the personality of the residents of Rose Hill.

“Last year’s designs ranged from a guitar to a doll’s head, and this year’s display promises to be similarly diverse.”

Ms Huyg said: “Street Lights celebrates the interests, skills and stories of Rose Hill residents by putting them up in lights.

“The estate becomes a gallery and the houses with the lights the works of art”.

Ms Beinart added: “It’s all under wraps at the moment, but it has been really exciting working with five new families this year.

“Following on from last year, we’ve worked with a total of 15 families this time, and there has been lots of interest around the estate.

“We’ve had workshops with the primary school and the family centre, and we’ve had so many people put their ideas across.

“There’s quite a buzz about the place.

“Last year, we had about 80 people on the walking tour and we will probably have even more this time.”

Street Lights is part of Art in Rose Hill, a three-year programme of visual arts activities.

It is being funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and supported by Oxford City Council’s south east area committee.

Suzanne Cotter, acting director of Modern Art Oxford, said: “Art in Rose Hill is an collaboration for the gallery.

“We’re looking forward to another spectacular display of lights this winter, and future projects with the residents of Rose Hill.”

The tour around the lights starts in The Oval at 5pm on Saturday.
