Reading the heart-rending report of Baby P, tortured to death as social services failed to save him was, asdly, little cause for surprise.

We now read that this apology of a mother, who is waiting to be sentenced in December, is to be given, when she leaves prison, a multi-million pound tax payers’ bill to pay for a new home, new name and round the clock protection by the police.

You could not make it up if you tried.

So come on, Gordon Brown, show some proper backbone and stop this madness now.
