A mother whose son needs a kidney transplant raised £2,000 at a charity auction on Saturday with 31 lots, including a hot air balloon ride and Premier League football tickets, up for grabs.

Diana Berry, 52, a barmaid at Summertown’s Grove House Club, held the event to raise money for the kidney unit at the Churchill Hospital in Headington.

She said: “We wanted to raise as much money as we can and have fun.”

Mrs Berry’s son Matt Trinder, 24, who grew up in Abingdon, requires 15 hours of dialysis a week because he suffers from a disease called IgA Neph- ropathy, which attacks his kidneys.

Unfortunately, she is unable to donate a kidney to her son because they do not have compatible blood types.

However, the mum-of-three is signed up to a pioneering transplant scheme that allows her to donate a kidney to another person in need of a kidney, whose friend or relative would donate a kidney to Matt.

She said 88 ‘pairs’ had already joined the scheme, which was only made legal last year. She and Matt will find out if they have been successfully paired next month. She said: “We are playing a waiting game as people get paired up every three months.”

Mrs Berry chose to raise money and thank the Churchill because of the months of blood tests and screening she undertook there.

She said: “Matt got rushed into hospital on Boxing Day last year and he was diagnosed in January. He’s been on dialysis ever since because his immune system has killed off his kidneys.

“Like any mother I want to help. I only need one kidney — and I want my 24-year-old boy to have a life.”

Saturday’s charity auction at the Grove House Club in Grove Street was sponsored by Oxford United and some staff turned up after their FA Cup tie at Torquay.

Local singer Bill Aitkens and Matt, a singer-songwriter, also performed.

Lots included a hot air balloon ride, a parachute jump, six-months’ gym membership, tea for two at the Randolph Hotel, signed Oxford United shirts and tickets to see the U’s, Manchester United, Bolton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur.
