Robbers carrying hammers raided a shop in Witney last night.

Two men wearing balaclavas went into the Tesco Express shop in Fettiplace Road, between 10.30pm and 10.50pm.

They threatened staff with the hammers and stole cash from three tills and cigarettes before running off.

One of the robbers is described as between 5ft 4in and 5ft 8in, with brown eyes, dark eyebrows and a broad nose.

He was wearing jeans and a white or cream coloured sports-waterproof top with a half-length zip from the neck and pouch or pocket at the front.

The second man was between 5ft 5in and 5ft 10in, slimmer and wearing dark clothing.

Both men spoke with local accents and carried blue bags.

Dc Grahame Lea said: “This is a particularly nasty incident and although the shop workers weren’t injured, they were left shaken.

“At the time of the robbery the town was busy, with plenty of people around who might have seen the men before the robbery happened or as they ran away.

“I urge anyone who may have seen these men before, during or after the robbery, or has any information, to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should call Witney police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
