Cars and gadgets featured on popular driving show Top Gear will be in Didcot next week to help raise awareness of road safety among young drivers.

Mechanics from the BBC show, who design and build the vehicles at Southmead Industrial Estate in Didcot, will display them at Didcot Fire Station as part of a road safety event.

A food blender, made out of V8 engine, and a modified people carrier, which both featured on last Sunday’s programme, will be at the Broadway fire station on Saturday, November 29.

Firefighters, who have organised the day, hope it will raise awareness of road safety among young drivers aged between 17 and 24.

They said statistically this age group is most likely to be involved in a traffic accident.

Firefighter Rob Mills said: “We hope the vehicles bought by the Top Gear team will be an excellent attraction and encourage a large attendance.

“Road traffic accidents are a big part of our work, they are the main thing we attend and a lot of them involve young people. We just hope it raises awareness of the state of their driving.”

Between 12pm and 4pm, motorists will be given a ‘Choices and Consequences’ road safety talk, and live demonstrations of how rescue teams remove casualties from vehicles.

An example of a ‘cut and shut’ vehicle will also be on display, provided by Oxfordshire Trading Standards.

Brackley-based Peugeot and Citroen car specialists, Pug1Off, who are experts in car modifications, will also be attending, and drivers will also be able to safely test their skills in a driving simulator.
