Residents of Barton are encouraged to take part in a Community Action Day today.

The event, which has been organised by the Barton Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG) and funded by Oxford Safer Communities Partnership, will take place in the Neighbourhood Centre between 10am and 4pm.

A number of different agencies and organisations will be on hand to provide information about their services and demonstrate the work that is happening in Barton to make the area an even more enjoyable and safe place to live.

Barton Neighbourhood Sergeant Yak Teladia, who will be attending the event, said: “The main objective of the day is to make people aware of the different organisations that are available to help and advise on a variety of issues.

“Thames Valley Police will be offering a bike marking facility and crime prevention advice. The Fire Service will be on hand to offer fire safety advice and the RSPCA will also be present offering an animal chipping service.

“OXSRAD will be offering free services aimed at getting young people involved in sports such as football, rugby, canoeing and many others. The Army Cadets and Junior Street Wardens will also be in attendance, trying to get more young people involved in their respective organisations.

“A sports day will also be taking place in the sports hall of the community centre and will be for local children aged between six and 13. We are hoping to provide food, along with prizes and certificates.

“This event is an opportunity to speak in confidence with local officers about any issues - from neighbourhood disputes to problems with litter and speeding, in fact any issue which affects you and your quality of life.”

Councillor Sajjad Malik, Executive Board Member for Safer Communities, said: “This is great partnership work, with different organisations coming together to give something back to the community of Barton.

“I hope residents make it down to the neighbourhood centre to pick up advice from the different organisation who will be attending and enjoy the entertainment.”
