This last week I had occasion to walk from the bus stop outside North Oxford Golf Club to the Water Eaton Park and Ride.

This was at about 6.30pm and I was constantly passed by cyclists – all of whom were courteous and considerate.

However, there is a narrow margin or error on the track on the golf course side and, of course, cycles are very quiet.

I soon developed the habit of checking behind me at frequent periods to ensure that a cyclist was not in the near proximity because I could envisage, were I to move in any way to my right at the time a cyclist was passing, there was a very real danger of being struck by the cycle or inadvertently pushing the cyclist into the road and potentially into the path of a motor vehicle, with its attendant consequences.

Might I suggest that the county council avoid this by making one footpath a cycle track to be used only by cyclists and the other a pedestrian walkway, which, of course, was the original intention – with cyclists riding into, and from, Oxford on the golf course side and pedestrians on the opposite footpath, or vice versa.

I have written to convey my suggestion to the council, as it is very obvious that our councillors frequently read the letters column in the Oxford Mail.

This gives all parties the opportunity to air any views they may have regarding the suggestion.
