THE Didcot Citizens’ Advice Bureau is celebrating its 40th birthday — and in the current economic crisis it is needed more than ever.

From looking after 900 cases in its first year, it now deals with more than 7,000 cases annually.

Manager Judith Abela said: “Our aim is to provide the help people need to deal with the problems they face.

“Although we now deal with more complex problems than we did 40 years ago, the advice is still given by highly trained volunteers.

“And with the current economic climate the need for our services is greater than ever, so we are looking at ways of developing them to help with this.”

The bureau was opened by local MP Airey Neave, who was later murdered by the IRA as he left the House of Commons in his car.

The service has its main office in Didcot but also has offices in Wallingford and RAF Benson and at GP surgeries.

The CAB is holding an anniversary quiz night next Friday at Didcot Football Club, starting at 8pm.

The £5 a head tickets are available at the CAB office at the Civic Hall or by telephoning 01235 814404.
