An Oxford pub landlady has hit out at the firebugs who torched vehicles a few feet from where she was sleeping.

Bridgett Harrison-Steele, landlady at the Bullnose Morris pub in Blackbird Leys, was only woken by her dog after the vandals set fire to the two vehicles six feet from her bedroom window.

She believes the Mercedes van and Mitsubishi 4X4 may have been set alight deliberately in a revenge attack against one of her pub’s customers.

The blaze was the first of two arson attacks on the estate in less than 24 hours.

At 9.20pm on Sunday, four cars were damaged when arsonists struck in Knights Road.

Mrs Harrison-Steele said: "Flames could have quite easily gone over and caught the wood, and then God knows what would have happened.

"It is a bit scary. It was a bit close for comfort. My bedroom was right next to it.

"They are total vandals. They don’t care about anybody but themselves."

The vehicles were parked in the Cuddesdon Way pub’s car park when they were targeted at about 4.45am on Sunday.

Mrs Harrison-Steele, who lives with her three children and granddaughter in a house attached to the pub, said it appeared petrol had been poured over the vehicles before they were set alight.

She said: "You can see it has had petrol chucked all over it. One of the vehicles has a hole in the windscreen where they have chucked something in and set fire to it. They are both completely burned out.

"They have done it for a reason. They have given no thought to the fact that it was so close to my home.

"They are not concerned about me. They are just concerned about getting what I presume is revenge."

In August last year, 28-year-old Thomas Nguruve found his car burned out in Ashmole Place, just yards from the pub.

Mrs Harrison-Steele said: "The regulars are a bit shocked. Everybody is.

"These things don’t happen very often. I am hoping this is it for a while round here.

"It was a year ago when it happened before. Whether that is related to this one I don’t know."

A Thames Valley Police spokesman confirmed police were treating the fires as arson. Anyone with information should call 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
