A group of teenagers from South Africa gave a colourful musical performance today for pupils from Oxford's Dragon School.

The visiting students from Johannesburg, aged 13 to 20, are staying with pupils from the independent preparatory school, in Bardwell Road, North Oxford, as part of a tour of Britain.

Fifteen South Africans attend the Sparrow Schools, in Johannesburg, which provide education for children from challenging backgrounds.

The teenagers are touring with a play called Lavela Ilanga: The Sun Rose, which tells the story of Sophiatown, a multi-racial community that was forcibly relocated in 1955.

Lisa Johnson, a spokesman for the Dragon School, said it had long-standing links with the Sparrow Schools. She added that the tour was raising money for and increasing awareness of the Sparrow Schools Foundation.

Ms Johnson added: "Bev Brooker from the Sparrow Schools told pupils in morning assembly about the history of the project, and this was followed by a number of performances."

John Baugh, headmaster of the Dragon School, said: "We were delighted to welcome these talented performers.

"We have long-standing links with the Sparrow Schools and greatly admire all the work they do with these impressive young people."
