I was amazed to read city councillor John Tanner's letter commenting on Tory plans to bring back weekly rubbish collections (Oxford Mail, October 3).

He calls it a gimmick.

He says the money needed would be better spent on other projects.

I cannot think of anything more in need of having money spent on it than cleaning up Oxford in as many ways as possible.

This is particularly true after the bad publicity recently, with many people, including tourists, calling Oxford a filthy city.

The Conservatives should be praised for their aims to clean up Oxford.

This is a good reason for voting for them and not Labour.

I see Mr Tanner is the city council's board member for a cleaner, greener Oxford.

Considering his policies, the green being mentioned must be mildew.
